What does proofreading of a dissertation entail?

When it comes to proofreading a dissertation, academics, researchers and writers of dissertations are of course our clients. Regarding proofreading and editing of your dissertation, perhaps you’ve finished the main part of your dissertation but errors in orthography, punctuation or content still need to be identified and removed from the text. If necessary, a plagiarism check should also be undertaken as this contributes to a dissertation that has been proofread and checked to the highest standard.

This is what we offer when we proofread your dissertation. In terms of proofreading of dissertations, we polish the text to make your main arguments and points stand out. In addition, we point out content-related errors when we proofread your dissertation – for example, if you contradict yourself, numbering and pagination is incorrect (in the table of contents or the lists of figures) or when the proportions in a pie chart add up to 101%.

Do I need proofreading for my dissertation?

As a rule, the answer to whether you need a proofreading for your dissertation is “yes”, because some dissertations, even when they’ve been read several times before, may still contain errors. When we proofread your dissertation, our experienced native-language proofreaders are aware that, over the course of 150 pages, for instance, it’s easy to write ‘timeframe’ in the introduction, ‘time frame’ in the discussion and ‘time-frame’ in the conclusion to your dissertation. So a careful proofreading of dissertations is one of the core services we offer.

The following is an overview of why proofreading your dissertation is strongly advised – recommended not just by most academic institutions but also by our dissertation proofreading team.

Improving your grade

The goal of writing your dissertation is to demonstrate that you can independently develop a topic within a deadline using accepted academic methods. Once the challenging research and writing tasks have been achieved, however, you may find that the grade for your dissertation is lower than you’d expected due to poor spelling and punctuation, an unclear or clichéd writing style, redundancies, repetition and omission of context, or a conclusion that seems rushed.

This is where a meticulous proofreading of your dissertation comes in. Our native-language proofreaders and editors of dissertations can address these shortcomings for you and offer suggestions and advice that have often resulted in higher overall grades for many postgraduates’ dissertations.

Counteracting accusations of plagiarism

Many writers of dissertations also prefer to make use of a service that checks they are not plagiarising. Alongside our three service packages offering proofreading of your dissertation, we can also undertake so-called “plagiarism control”. This means that we use specialised software that detects passages that have not been fully acknowledged as someone else’s work. No one should be able to accuse you of not having checked your dissertation for plagiarism before you submit it to the relevant academic authority.

We recommend this service because, in our experience, writers of dissertations are occasionally questioned about the authenticity and veracity of their work. An effective proofreading of your dissertation, though it will correct any errors of spelling, orthography and grammar, for example, will not necessarily identify passages that have come from other sources. Our plagiarism control service will ensure your peace of mind on this score.

In an environment where new forms of text-producing software are coming under scrutiny for their use of source material and referencing conventions, academic institutions are increasingly advising their postgraduate members to include a plagiarism check as part of a comprehensive proofreading of their PhD dissertations. We recommend the same. Because we know a great deal of effort has gone into writing your dissertation, you only have a limited number of attempts to pass, and ultimately the last thing you want is to be challenged due to an uncited quotation or an unsourced reference.

Safeguard yourself from these potential problems by having us perform a plagiarism check for your dissertation. We use specialised software that detects potential plagiarism. No one should be able to accuse you of not having checked your dissertation for plagiarism before you submit it to your supervisor or examiner.

Enhancing readability

When we proofread your dissertation, we ensure that any corrections or suggestions are designed to have a positive effect on its reader(s) and will improve the overall grade you receive for your dissertation.

Reading a PhD dissertation represents a big commitment of time and effort on the part of your examiner. Not only that, we are proud to have proofread many dissertations that have gone on to be published. In other words, your dissertation – proofread to the highest standard – may well end up reaching a wider readership. For this reason, we spend a lot of time in proofreading and correcting your dissertation because we value the effort you put into writing it.

Submitting an excellent dissertation that meets your examiner’s expectations means that you should be viewed in a good light when it comes to your oral examination. Not only that, a postgraduate who has produced a well-written and accurately proofread dissertation may gain research points for themselves as well as reflecting well on the academic institution supporting them.

And, of course, a meticulously proofread dissertation can help put you on the path to academic advancement and may open the doors to further funding, not just for postdoctoral work you may be considering but also for any future academic institutions that successfully compete for your expertise.

Remove content problems before the oral defence of your dissertation and before its publication

An effective proofreading of your dissertation will also help you to prepare for the oral exam. If we’re asking questions about your work when we proofread your dissertation, you’ll be able to address these before you have to defend your work in the oral exam. To help you avoid the examiner misunderstanding your points (perhaps because your language use, and therefore your argument, is unclear) we remove these pitfalls and ask questions as part our service packages offering proofreading of your dissertation. Our meticulous proofreading of your dissertation will also ensure that your performance in the oral exam is more confident and better supported by the appropriate arguments and evidence.

A professional proofreading of your dissertation by native-language speakers will also make it more likely for your work to be seriously considered for publication. In our experience, potential publishers – and not just academic ones – are more receptive to dissertation texts that are tailored to their readership and market. So we definitely recommend our proofreading of dissertations service packages if you’re serious about taking the next step in your career as a respected and published contributor to your field.

Is proofreading a dissertation legal?

Absolutely. Not only is proofreading a dissertation legal, it’s specifically recommended by academic institutions. The dissertation is your intellectual property, and you’re also required to make a declaration of its authenticity as an original piece of work. But this doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to have your dissertation proofread and corrected. We proofread your dissertation; we don’t write it for you. You alone are responsible for the content of your dissertation. However, we’ll enhance your dissertation by proofreading it and pointing out any discrepancies, inconsistencies or problems of style.

Universities and other academic institutes also recommend proofreading of a dissertation. Any reader of your dissertation, whether an academic specialist or someone with a more general interest in your work, will be grateful to read a professionally edited, corrected and proofread dissertation because the way you express your ideas and arguments will be clear, appropriate and to the point.

Is a plagiarism check possible for the dissertation?

Yes, we also offer a plagiarism check for your dissertation. This costs €30.00 (excl. VAT) for up to 150 pages. For longer texts, an additional charge will be necessary.

Why are we suitable for proofreading your dissertation?

In the following remarks, we clarify why we’re convinced that we’re your ideal partner for proofreading your dissertation.

References

We hope our references speak for themselves.

After all, we don’t just proofread dissertations, we also proofread texts from clients in business and politics – from menu cards to quarterly reports, from personal statements to conference brochures. This trust that companies place in our work is transferable to the proofreading of dissertations. For this reason, our regular customers are not only firms but also students who may initially come to us with term papers, a Bachelor thesis or a Master thesis, and who then come back as postgraduates to use our services again for proofreading of their PhD thesis or dissertation.

So put your trust in our references and let us proofread your dissertation. We’ll enhance your draft dissertation to ensure your completed dissertation is as readable, polished and cogent as it can possibly be.

Transparency creates trust

After an initial review of your dissertation text, we’ll first provide you with an offer that will specify the service and the final price. If you agree to this offer, the actual proofreading of your dissertation can then get underway. You’ll be fully informed about every step in the process of editing and proofreading of your dissertation. No hidden costs – when it comes to proofreading of your dissertation, you pay only what’s been pre-agreed and written into the dissertation proofreading offer that you signed for in close consultation with our dissertation proofreading team.

Customer testimonials

We’ve been well-praised for our proofreading of dissertations, which of course makes us proud of the dissertation proofreading services we offer. That’s why we’re pleased when satisfied clients come back to us. Many customers have in fact recommended us to others. And it makes us especially proud when customers tell us that, as a result of our proofreading of their dissertation, their work has ended up receiving a higher grade, been published in academic journals and in some cases has even appeared as a complete book.

We first review your dissertation – and then draw up a suitable schedule

Before you receive an offer from us for a proofreading of your dissertation, we’ll carefully review your written work. We check whether we understand the content of the topics your dissertation covers, and we’ll then determine the time required to complete the proofreading of your dissertation. Based on this, we come up with a time frame for proofreading and editing your dissertation, always making sure we offer you enough “buffer time” for you to meet your deadlines.

An example

Perhaps you’ve written a dissertation of 125 standard pages. In this case, we’d calculate around five working days for proofreading of your dissertation – about 25 pages per day. If necessary, we might need one or two days extra. In effect, you should receive your fully proofread dissertation after around five days; of course, we always inquire about any interim or final deadlines.

This realistic schedule will help you to plan the time you’ll need after we’ve proofread your dissertation, and we’re always “on-call” if you need any further feedback regarding our proofreading and editing of your PhD dissertation.

We also reject dissertations

We reject dissertations with an unrealistic time frame. Because we want to do a good job in proofreading your dissertation, a certain time frame is always needed. If necessary, you can arrange an extension of the deadline for your dissertation with your supervisor. It’s important that you hand in a high-quality dissertation, but your grade shouldn’t suffer because you’re pressed for time.

Prices

Prices vary greatly from one proofreading service to another, and we’re aware that our dissertation proofreading services reflect a premium price. But this is part of our professional mandate as we attach the highest importance to quality. Editing texts and proofreading dissertations properly takes time. This time, in turn, goes hand in hand with a financial cost. This means that, in order for us to proofread your dissertation optimally, certain prices are unavoidable. After all, you want your dissertation proofread and edited conscientiously and not just quickly.

Our editors are university graduates

All our staff have a university degree. This requirement is to ensure that your dissertation is proofread appropriately by people familiar with the schedules and workflows involved in writing a dissertation. Only someone who knows these requirements themselves can give you the best tips and advice when it comes to proofreading and editing of your dissertation.

Experience and expertise

Our team members are all at least 40 years old. This helps ensure that nobody inexperienced will be proofreading your dissertation, but only those editors who have already gained experience in proofreading, editing and working with a variety of texts for different clients, in the world of academia and beyond.

For proofreading your dissertation, we’re experts in the procedures, processes, and concerns that you’re facing, and we’re convinced we’re the right partners for proofreading, correcting and editing your PhD dissertation.

We are based in Berlin

When it comes to requesting a top-quality proofreading of your dissertation, you’re naturally looking for a proofreading service you can rely on. Perhaps the deadline for your completed dissertation is getting closer, so you may already be under time pressure. How much would proofreading of my dissertation cost?

That depends on which of our three service packages you take advantage of. For proofreading of dissertations, we offer the following three service packages:

Package 1: Proofreading Dissertation "light"€6.00 / standard page
Package 2: Proofreading Dissertation "BASIC"€7.00 / standard page
Package 3: Proofreading Dissertation "COMPLETE"€8.00 / standard page

We recommend the "COMPLETE" proofreading service (our third package) for proofreading of your dissertation, because only in this package do we include our comments and notes (in the Comments column on "Track Changes" mode) where we might see discrepancies or inconsistencies in your work. Although it’s our premium package, 99% of our clients choose this for a proofreading of their dissertation.

Is proofreading my dissertation worth it?

Yes, and for several reasons:

For improving the readability of your dissertation

Regarding the recommendation that postgraduates should have a comprehensive proofreading and editing of their PhD theses and dissertations, a dissertation that is unclear or whose argument is sometimes poorly expressed could end up being negatively assessed. Our service packages – which offer a meticulous editing and proofreading of dissertations – ensure your argument comes across clearly and unambiguously, and this can stand you in good stead when the time comes for you to defend your dissertation in your oral examination.

For eliminating discrepancies before the oral exam

During the proofreading of your dissertation, in the right-hand margin we’ll include comments, suggestions and queries about any content in your dissertation. During the proofreading of your dissertation, we may question a line of argument or suggest a different wording that, in the opinion of our mother-tongue proofreaders, could help to bring your point across more effectively. We hope that, in proofreading your dissertation, by asking these questions or giving remarks we might help you see what may still be lacking or unclear in the text of your dissertation.

The more ambiguities we clear up in our proofreading of your dissertation before the oral exam, the fewer awkward questions your professor or supervisor will bowl at you during the procedure. You may feel well-prepared in terms of explaining the content of your paper, but one “odd” question from your supervisor can be enough to make you uncomfortable just because he or she may have misunderstood the content. Therefore, when we proofread your dissertation, we may add suggestions in the margins of your dissertation document so that we can help you avoid difficulties in the oral examination.

For ensuring your dissertation is “fit for print”

It may well occur that your dissertation, or part of it, is published as a stand-alone book or as a chapter in an anthology of academic texts. You should definitely consider having your dissertation proofread in this case, to make sure your dissertation is professionally corrected and prepared for print.

Is a test proofreading of my dissertation possible?

Yes, you have the opportunity to send up to two A4 pages of your dissertation, which we’ll proofread and correct for you – preferably depending on the dissertation proofreading package you’re considering – absolutely free of charge. This preliminary proofreading of your dissertation means that we can gauge the quality of your work and you can judge the effectiveness of our work.

How do I pay for the proofreading of my dissertation?

You can pay for the proofreading of your dissertation by bank transfer as well as by PayPal.

Incidentally, when it comes to bank transfers, we’ll usually ask you to e-mail us the bank transfer receipt. This saves time and means we can start proofreading your dissertation straight away.

What will the corrections look like in my dissertation?

When proofreading your dissertation, we always use Word’s correction mode where every change in the text is displayed in colour. For comments in the margin of your dissertation document, we highlight words, phrases or sometimes whole sentences. In the fully proofread dissertation document, these relevant parts are highlighted and connected to a comment.

You’ll receive two versions back

After we’ve proofread your dissertation, you’ll always receive two versions back from us.

In the first version, you’ll be able to see all our changes.

In the second version, these changes have already been included in your dissertation document. But our marginal comments are still in the dissertation text. We recommend that you continue working directly with this second version so that you can concentrate on the comments that appear in the margin. You can then delete these comments once you’re satisfied you’ve addressed any suggestions we raised in our proofreading and editing of your dissertation.

How can I order a proofreading of my dissertation?

Contact us by phone or e-mail.

If you’d like to have your dissertation proofread, just get in touch with us with details of your dissertation project and ask for a quote. For us to provide you with the most appropriate dissertation proofreading package, key information would include the deadline for your completed dissertation, the scope of your dissertation project and the current status of your dissertation (whether your text appears as a first draft or is broadly complete, for example). That way, we can ensure our proofreading and editing of your dissertation is carried out in a timely and appropriate manner that suits your requirements.

For our dissertation proofreading offer, we’d also need your postal address as well as confirmation of the dissertation proofreading service package you’d like to take advantage of:

Package 1: Proofreading Dissertation "light"

Package 2: Proofreading Dissertation "BASIC"

Package 3: Proofreading Dissertation "COMPLETE" (recommended)

Please send us all the dissertation texts you would like us to proofread so that we can determine the number of "standard pages" (1 standard page = 1,600 characters), as this is necessary for calculating fairly our offer for proofreading your dissertation.

How can I save money on my dissertation proofreading?

In cooperation with companies

Are you writing your dissertation in cooperation with a company? In many cases, it’s possible to negotiate funding for the proofreading of your dissertation – some companies may even bear the entire costs for the proofreading of a dissertation.

In cooperation with a university

Some dissertations are written as a joint project with a university, college or other academic or research institute. Perhaps you can inquire there for funding for a proofreading of your dissertation, if you think you might be eligible for help towards a proofreading of your dissertation.

FAQs about the proofreading of a dissertation

How long would it take to proofread my dissertation?

Depending on the amount of work and the quality of what you submit (in terms of writing, layout, pagination and referencing, for instance), we can usually proofread and edit 20 to 25 pages of your dissertation per day. We always allow for some buffer time. For a 125-page dissertation, we’ll generally assume five days for dissertation proofreading.

Of course, when it comes to proofreading and correcting longer dissertation texts, we’ll give you an offer commensurate with the length of the dissertation. For any questions you have that do not appear in this section of FAQs relating to proofreading of dissertations, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail us for a more detailed discussion.

Why are there more pages on the pricing quote than I’ve written?

When we receive your dissertation for proofreading and editing, we determine the number of characters you’ve written and calculate the number of so-called “standard pages” from this. A standard page consists of 1,600 characters, regardless of font size and number of illustrations, for example. In this way, our pricing policy for service packages offering a proofreading of your dissertation stays fair because only the actual written text is counted.

Some authors use a small font and single spacing, while others include a lot of graphics, figures and tables in their dissertations – but in the end, when it comes to proofreading of your dissertation, only the number of written characters counts. That’s why there are differences between the number of A4 pages and the number of so-called “standard pages”. However, the calculation for proofreading your dissertation is always fair – both for you as the dissertation’s author and for us as its proofreaders.

Incidentally, some people ask us not to proofread references (or footnotes and appendices) in their dissertations, so please be sure, where necessary, to clarify which parts of your dissertation you’d like to have proofread.

You may also be sending us a “cumulative dissertation”, made up of sections (some of which might have already been published). Please let us know in advance which parts of your cumulative dissertation you need proofreading.

What if my dissertation is subject to non-disclosure considerations?

If your dissertation is subject to a restriction notice (perhaps because it contains sensitive information regarding security or healthcare policy, for example), if you’re inquiring about our dissertation proofreading service packages you’ll receive an offer from us with a corresponding clause stating that we undertake not to disclose internal details of your dissertation to any outside parties when we undertake proofreading of your dissertation.

How many days before the deadline should I submit my dissertation for proofreading?

That depends on how extensive your dissertation is, how complete or incomplete it still is, and the quality of the dissertation text we receive for proofreading. If your dissertation is already broadly complete, relatively straightforward to read and around 100-125 “standard pages” long, then we’ll probably need five working days to fully proofread your dissertation.

In cases where longer dissertations need to be proofread, you might need a few more days for reworking and incorporating our suggestions. This will ensure that your dissertation has been comprehensively edited and proofread, leading to a finished dissertation of higher quality as a result of taking advantage of our dissertation proofreading services.
